This rare shagreen “Stack of Books” by Maitland Smith functions as wonderful decorative side table with storage. This trompe l’oeil table is entirely veneered in shagreen, a technique that the workrooms at Maitland Smith were masters at. The “stack of books” has a cleverly concealed lid at the top for storage and one of the book spines opens out as a drawer, it is there the original brass placard is placed. This special piece will be a real conversation piece and will work in both traditional interiors as well as modern. In all original condition the work is nearly perfect with a small quarter inch separation along one edge.
