Original Artwork from “Parsley” by Ludwig Bemelmans
A charming pair of original paintings by Ludwig Bemelmans that were used as illustrations for his children’s book “Parsley”, published in 1955, about an old twisted tree and stag who grew old together in the forest, having survived many lumberman and hunters. The top painting is titled “Parsley – Hunter’s Descent” and has markings on the back indicating it was printed at 51 1/2% for plate 19. The bottom painting is titled “Parsley – Hunter’s Ascent” and has markings on the back indicating it was printed at 52 1/2% for plate 16. Both paintings were originally sold by Hammer Galleries and retain their tags from there as well as from the April 20-May 20, 1956 Bemelmans exhibit at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Both pieces also bear a personal inscription from the artist to Mr & Mrs James F. Howard Jr. The artists board measures 23 x 28. Dimensions given below are for the framed paintings.
