“Boy on a Dolphin” Bronze Ashtray by FC Hibbard
A rare bronze ashtray featuring a boy on a dolphin designed by Frederick Cleveland Hibbard.
A souvenir that was given to male guests at the opening gala of the Stevens Hotel on May 2nd, 1927 (the women were given, “Two Boys and a Fish” as a pair of bookends). Upon its inauguration, Stevens Hotel was known as a prominent landmark in Chicago, and as the world’s largest hotel featuring 3000 rooms.
The boy is modeled after John Paul Stevens, son of the hotel owner, James W. Stevens. Hibbard also designed the original bronze “Boy on Dolphin” fountains in the lobby of the Stevens Hotel. Stamped: “Souvenir from Opening. The Stevens: the World’s Greatest Hotel. May 2nd 1927. Chicago”. An excellent example of Hibbard’s work, and a great piece of Chicago history.
